Rain Sound

buzzing insects hide

as the dry air turns fragrant

the soft sound of rain

During the summer in North Carolina there is a constant hum of insects. Their sound underlies everything. When the rain finally comes the first thing I notice is the wonderful smell of the earth embracing the moisture. And then I realize: it’s silent, except for the quiet sounds of rainfall.
